Interview with Richard, Implementation Consultant

A zeal for problem-solving in a social setting, self-motivation and self-management, and a taste for travel are just some of the qualities that could draw someone to a career as an implementation consultant. Recently, I spoke with Richard A., an implementation consultant in the Reynolds office in Birmingham, U.K., to get his perspective on the position.

Tell me a little bit about your life, education, and work history before Reynolds.

I attended the University of Birmingham, studying theology with the aim of becoming a teacher. At the same time, I volunteered for several charity organizations and worked at a family business in an IT support role.

That experience in working alongside people to solve their problems gave me the necessary skills to work alongside clients today.

What made you want to join Reynolds?

It was clear from first encounter that Reynolds appreciates and values its employees, and welcomes suggestions for business improvement. This position draws directly on my experiences as a teacher, while offering better work-life balance, and involves identifying and resolving client concerns within a short time.

Describe your typical day. What do you enjoy about your role?

Because this role is split between in-office and on-site work, I usually have one of two typical days:
If I’m in the office, I call and meet clients to discuss their requirements of our POWER dealership management system, set up the system, review the progress of client usage on training versions, and complete data conversions. I also troubleshoot client concerns and keep a record of client communication.

If I’m on-site with a client, I conduct meetings and provide support to POWER users directly.
The most important part of the role for me is the feeling of a job well done – especially when directly working with clients. I enjoy the social aspect of the job and the satisfaction of seeing an entire project through from beginning to end.

What skills do you think are essential to succeed in your position?

One key skill is self-motivation, as there are times when I am given responsibility for a large part or the whole of a project. It also demands a constant willingness to learn and adjust to unique challenges on a daily basis, as well as the ability to manage one’s time responsibly and have the patience to see things through.

What would you tell someone considering a career as an implementation consultant with Reynolds?

If you’re willing to put in the hard work, the company will pay you back tenfold in job satisfaction and appreciation.
